This cohort worked to use technology as a learning tool for children in special education classrooms. Through using new tools, students are engaged and interested in technology while learning. Throughout the year, this cohort worked in two different classrooms and hopes to contribute what it learned to the teacher education program as a whole.

New technology is fun for children to use, as well as engaging. When new technologies also help children learn, they become learning tools. Ensuring that technology in the classroom promotes learning is integral to its use. The Promoting the Use of Technology in Special Education Classrooms cohort demonstrated this by creating new ways to use technology as learning tools for children with special needs.

The cohort brought together SoE Professor Suzzane Robinson and SoE students Laila Richman and Jennifer Zink. The cohort worked in two different classrooms and tested various types of technology with these classes. One innovative way the cohort personally connected children with technology is through the creation of social stories about manners. The cohort used digital pictures of the students and PowerPoint slides to create personalized stories the children can access on a computer. The cohort has also used PowerPoint to create instructional tutorials for children in special education classrooms.

This cohort provides just one example of using technology tailored to student needs to enhance learning. By using PowerPoint, HyperStudio, WebQuest and other tools, the cohort members learned how to evaluate and modify technology to make it most beneficial to the students who are using it to learn.
