Create Music Tutorial
Objective: To create C Major Scale notation using Finale NotePad.
Introduction: Finale NotePad is a basic notation software that lets you create
simple compositions, arrangements, etc. Key features of NotePad include a set-up wizard that lets you select instrumentation, key signature,
time signature, playback controls that let you hear it as you see it, easy lyric and text entry tools, simple note entry, and
printing possibilities. NotePad files can be read by Finale and can also be saved as web pages for easy uploading to the Internet.
Skill Practice: Create C Major Scale notation using Finale NotePad
Step 1: Download Finale NotePad - If the computer you are using does not have Finale NotePad software, go to http://www.codamusic.com to download a free Mac or PC version of Finale Notepad.
Step 2: Open NotePad . The set-up wizard will automatically appear.
Type in a title and the name of the composer. Select a paper size and orientation. When finished, click on "Next".
Step 3: Select Instrumentation The second page of the set-up wizard will automatically appear.
Select the instrumentation that your document will contain by highlighting the instrument group, highlighting the instrument, and pressing the add button. Continue adding the instrumentation until you have selected the appropriate ones. Click on Next.
Step 4: Time Signature and Key Signature Selection The third page of the set-up wizard will automatically appear.
Click on the time signature that you wish to use. Then scroll to select the key you want your composition to be in. Click on Finish
Step 5: Layout Notes Using the Simple Entry Palette at the top of the screen, select the note value you wish to begin with.
Then using the mouse, position the cross-hairs directly on top of the place you want the note to occur and click the left mouse button. FYI: Ledger lines will appear for notes above and below the staff. Continue entering notes until your work is completed.
Step 6: Add Dynamics, Slurs, and etc. Using the Smart Shape Palette at the top of the screen, select the item you wish to add.
Then using the mouse, position the cross-hairs directly on the note you want to add it close to and click the left mouse button. Continue until you have added all of the options that you want.
Hint: Adding or Deleting Measures To add or delete measures, "left click" on the measures
icon on the Main Tool Palette. If you want to delete measures,
a) click in the first measure that you want to delete, b) press and hold the shift key while you click in the last measure that you want to delete,
c) let go of both the mouse and the shift key, 4) click on Measures on the toolbar, and d) scroll down to Delete.
To add measures: a) click in the measure to the left of where you want the new measure(s) to appear, b) go up to the tool bar and use the mouse
to click on Measures, and c) scroll down to Add.
A small box will appear, asking you how many measures you would like to add.
Step 7: Save When your document is complete, you should save it. You also have the option of printing it, by using the
mouse to click on the word File on the tool-bar and scrolling down to Print.... The document can also be saved as a Web Page. This can be done
by using the mouse to click on the word File on the mail tool-bar and then by scrolling down to Save as Web Page....
