1. Mid-Term
Exams (4) = 100 points each
·
Four Mid-Term exams will be administered during the
semester. Exams will consist of a variety of questions, including Multiple
Choice, T/F, and matching. Check the class schedule for test dates.
2. Health
Topic Debate = 75 points
·
Student groups will take part in a debate on a current
health issue/topic. A sign-up sheet with
a list of debate topics will be distributed during the first week of class.
Each debate team will provide all students in the class with a 1-page outline
of important points and at least 5 references (journal articles, books,
reputable web sites) supporting their argument. Additional guidelines for the
debates will be provided during the first week of class.
3. Weekly Quiz = ~75
points

A 5-question quiz will be administered during each Tuesday
class period. Quiz questions will come from class discussion from the previous
week. There will not be a quiz on the first Tuesday of the semester.
4. Attendance
= 50 points
·
Attendance will be taken during class periods. Students are
expected to attend all classes and actively participate. * Note * - Each absence is = - 5 points.
1. Invite a Guest Speaker to Class = 20 Points
·
Students can invite friends or associates, who are health
professionals, to come speak in our class. If you have such a friend, please
talk with Tony about scheduling a time for the friend to come speak.
2. 5-Minute
Oral Report = 20 Points
·
Students can 1) find a journal article or newspaper article
related to a class discussion or health topic, and 2) present the most
important points of the article to the class. See Tony for details.
3. Television
News Article Related to a Current Health Issue = 20 Points (Dateline, 20/20, 48 Hours, MSNBC, etc.)

Students can 1) record a television news article related to
a health issue, 2) briefly introduce the program to the class, and 3) show it to
the class. See Tony for details and scheduling. Videos may not be returned, so
use a blank videotape for this assignment.
4. Online
Resource Assignment = 20 Points
·
Students can choose a topic from class discussion or the
text, and 1) find, 2) evaluate, and 3) rank 20 websites relating to the
topic. A rank of 1 = most informative/helpful website. A rank of 20 =
least informative/helpful website. Students must provide a complete web address
(URL) and a brief summary (2-3 sentences) for each website to support your
rankings. See Tony for details. Must be typed.
